Celebrating the Achievements of Our Workers

Since 1882 Labor Day has been celebrated on the first Monday in September to honor the economic and social contributions of the American worker.

This month we are celebrating the accomplishments of our workers by sharing with our supporters some inspiring success stories through our newsletters, blog and Facebook page.

Recently one of our workers, John, was hired full-time by an Alaskan trucking company. After working at day labor jobs through the Millionair Club’s Day Labor Referral Program, John was able to gain practical skills and confidence that made him a valuable hire for this company. He now earns an excellent salary that includes full benefits.

In addition to providing workers with practical job experiences and the opportunities to secure permanent employment, we are also working hard to secure housing for our participants who are homeless. In one year, staff in our Housing Assistance Program has found permanent or transitional housing for 31 men and women in our programs.

Your loyal support of the Millionair Club Charity makes our work—and these success stories—possible. Thanks for your commitment to our workers.

We will continue to share good news throughout this month. Have a safe and happy fall.

New Partnership with Habitat for Humanity Offers Workers New Job Skills Training

There’s nothing better than when one great cause helps another.

The Millionair Club Charity is proud to announce a new partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Seattle/South King County to offer more work and training opportunities to our workers.

This new partnership came to fruition when we identified mutual needs within our two organizations.

Habitat for Humanity’s work in building housing for low-income families cannot happen without workers with experience in construction, repair, painting, warehouse and maintenance. This is where the Millionair Club steps in, as we can provide the qualified workers needed for Habitat for Humanity’s numerous projects around this area.

Starting this month, our workers will be given the chance to work for Habitat for Humanity for a three-month period to gain practical work experience and valuable skills to strengthen their resumes.

Vernon, who recently found work through our Day Labor Referral Program, can testify to how important it is to gain work experience during this tough job market.

“[The Millionair Club Charity] has gotten me more job experience and I really appreciate the effort that they put into the work services that they provide,” Vernon tells us.

We are excited to launch this new work program that will help build housing for low-income families while giving workers like Vernon more opportunities to land permanent employment.

9th Annual Golf Tournament Contest and Prize Guide

Check out this 9th Annual Golf Tournament Contest and Prize Guide to see what events and prizes the Millionair Club Charity has in store for our annual golf tournament on Sept. 21, 2012.

The funds we raise with this event will directly benefit our Day Labor Referral Program to create a job skills training program thanks to our new partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Seattle/South King County. Join us in getting people back to work while building affordable homes for low-income working families in our community!

Shower and Laundry Center Gives Dignity to Our Workers

Most people have heard of the Urban Rest Stop and other generous Seattle-area nonprofits that offer a free place to take a nice, hot shower. But not too many folks know that the Millionair Club Charity also provides these services to the less fortunate right here in our Belltown neighborhood.

Every year more than 3,000 showers are taken at the Donald Lofquist Shower and Laundry Center while about 100 people monthly can do a load of laundry at no cost. Our Hygiene Center is located right in our building, so workers don’t have to travel somewhere else to land a job and eat a meal.

We believe everyone deserves a chance at dignity, even those in our society who have very little. This is our way of serving the immediate needs of the people who walk through our doors.

Our shower and laundry services are reserved for anyone who is scheduled to go on a job. So while a worker is out on a day labor job, their clothing is safely being washed and dried in our building, ready for them to retrieve when they return later that day.

“The [Shower and Laundry Center] is very important to me because I need to take a shower whenever I work the Millionair Club,” says Anthony, a Millionair Club Charity worker.

Trejano, another Millionair Club worker, says it’s convenient for workers to be able to go on a job and do their laundry at the same time.

“It is very important for all of us who use the Millionair Club and its facilities to be clean when we come to our jobs,” says Trejano.

The Shower and Laundry Center is open year-around on weekdays from 6-10 a.m. and is open to workers who are registered in our employment program.
